Occasion

New baby

For a new baby, think of the parents first. Soft pastel flowers, roses, lisianthus, tulips or freesias feel celebratory and gentle. Keep the message joyful but sensitive.

Etiquette and customs

  • Text before visiting. Wards have rules and the mother may be exhausted.
  • Add something for the mother too: tea, chocolate, hand cream or a small practical kindness.
  • Soft pink, white, cream flowers and eucalyptus feel clean and calm.

What to avoid

  • Avoid strongly scented lilies with the stamens still in.
  • Glass vases and large arrangements are not ideal. A ward has lots of motion, and later there are small hands.
  • Yellow may evoke grief for some older relatives. Pink, white and soft greenery are safer.
